Nordic Swan Ecolabelled Construction Continues to Grow
Despite the economic downturn, the number of Nordic Swan Ecolabelled residential buildings, preschools, and schools in the Nordics continues to grow. This is shown in new statistics from Nordic Ecolabelling. Among the Nordic countries, the smallest one, Iceland, had the largest increase in 2024, with 21%. The majority of buildings are in Sweden, both completed and ongoing projects.

Nordic Swan Ecolabelled construction continues to grow, and there is great interest in continuing to build with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, as shown by the new statistics. This is despite financial difficulties in the construction industry and stricter requirements for obtaining a Nordic Swan Ecolabel license. The requirements for new buildings have been tightened, meaning licence holders must reapply and prove that they meet the new standards.
– We are pleased that so many licence holders choose to continue working with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, the official ecolabel of the Nordics, and that we also see new licence holders. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel serves as proof for construction companies that their buildings meet strict environmental requirements. It is also an effective tool for complying with new EU regulations, both for communication and reporting on excellent environmental performance, says Linda Carnby, Head of the Housing Business Area.
Nordic Ecolabelling’s criteria are based on a life cycle perspective, considering relevant environmental, climate, and health aspects. As the criteria are regularly updated, Nordic Swan Ecolabelled buildings remain among the most environmentally sustainable in the industry.
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel Creates a Ripple Effect
License holders appear to view official Type 1 ecolabelling as a long-term investment.
– We can see that our licence holders consider environmental responsibility a core value that the economic downturn does not shake. We are pleased about this since reaching environmental and climate goals is urgent. Interest in Nordic Swan Ecolabelled construction has also created a ripple effect, leading to new product groups. It is now also possible to ecolabel the operation of the property itself, says Linda Carnby.
The requirements for Nordic Swan Ecolabelled building operations aim to optimize resource use and reduce the building’s climate footprint. At Fastighetsmässan on March 12-13 in Stockholm, the new criteria for building operations will be presented by Joel O’Reilly and Linda Carnby.
